CCCI urges PM to review surcharge on local LC

The Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) on Wednesday urged prime minister Sheikh Hasina to hold a dialogue with all concerned and stakeholders in order to remove the inconsistencies of law regarding the local Letters of Credit (LC).

The CCCI leaders urged the PM to review the maximum 5% surcharge imposed on local LC and the lowest turnover tax. The CCCI leaders in a roundtable discussion at the Chamber Auditorium also threatened to take recourse of law if proper steps are not taken to this effect.

Addressing the roundtable as the chief guest, outgoing CCCI president MA Latif MP, urged the prime minister to hold a dialogue with the businessmen and professionals in order to remove the 'irregularities' of law.

He also urged the government to form a monitoring cell led by the CCCI so that the tax officials cannot do any irregularities utilizing the loopholes of law.

CCCI president Murshed Murad Ibrahim presided over the roundtable while Prof Selim Uddin of Chittagong University presented the key- note paper in the discussion.

Former president of Chittagong Taxes Bar Association Advocate Mohammad Ilias, director of Chittagong Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry MA Malek and Deputy General Manger of Bangladesh Bank M Abul Bashar, among others, spoke on the occasion.
