The Opposition BNP sees the move of the government to amend the 'Grameen Bank Ordinance 1983' as a 'conspiracy' saying that the government is doing such dirty 'conspiracy' out of its personal vendetta against the Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus.
In a statement on Friday, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the government has taken the decision in a pre-planned way to destroy the bank.
The Cabinet at a meeting on Thursday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, took the decision to amend the Ordinance to reduce the power of the bank's board. The Cabinet also ordered a fresh investigation into the financial transactions of Dr Yunus in his later years as Managing Director of the bank. Mirza Fakhrul said the government has tarnished the national image by dishonouring and harming Dr Yunus and Grameen Bank and now it is out to destroy the bank completely.
"The government has become blind folded by personal hatred against Grameen Bank and Dr Yunus. If the government thinks someone is their enemy, they can't rest until destroying this enemy completely," he said.
Terming the bank as the bank of the poor, the BNP leader called upon the government to stop the move to amend the ordinance of the bank aimed at changing the rule to appoint the Managing Director of the microlender.
Earlier after the Cabinet's decision, Dr Yunus in an instant statement said the government intention is nothing but to take over the bank and requested the nation to come forward to save the bank, claiming it as the asset of the poor.
The BNP spokesperson, said the government move has to be stopped for the sake of the poor. Otherwise, people from all walks of life will build a resistance against this destructive decision, of the autocratic government, he warned.
Expressing deep concern he said the Awami League government had never thought about country and countrymen. So they are conspiring against the Grameen Bank to harm the life and livelihood of lakhs of poor people, he alleged.
