‘Digital library established at 28 public, private universities’
. BSS, Dhaka
The University Grants Commission (UGC) Digital Library (UDL), has been established at 28 public and private universities under a World Bank supported project. The UDL subscribes to electronic-resources from acclaimed international electronic journals such as ACM, Emerald and JSTOR, a source in the WB said here on Thursday.
This initiative was taken under the 81 million US dollar project titled 'Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP) being implemented by the government through the UGC. Enhancing the quality and relevance of higher education is currently one of the items at the top of the government's agenda. Establishment of an independent Accreditation Council has been identified as one way to address these goals, as well as introducing greater competition into the funding of university research.
The project promotes academic innovation in both public and private universities through a competitive funding mechanism, known as the Academic Innovation Fund (AIF), as well as through establishment of electronic tools to enhance the educational experience of professors, students, and researchers. The aim of the AIF is to improve the quality of teaching- learning and develop academic infrastructure.
A total of 196 grants have so far been awarded to 27 public universities and two private universities. Ninety seven grants went to window one to help universities carry out self- assessments as the first step in moving towards accreditation.
