Avoiding childhood obesity
Dr. Mosamat Umma Kulsum:
Maniza said," Look mom, I have gained 5kg.Now I am fat, really fat. Why don't you cook at home. My friends keeps teasing me at school. Maniza is 15years and her weight has crossed the BMI level.
Mom said," Honey you are not fat and cooking at home is very hectic. I don't have helping hand for cleaning the fish and vegetables.
Nowadays this is an uncommon conversation heard .Mostly children hates eating vegetables and fish. They hate colorful plates. They like eating chicken, chicken and chicken…..
So….what is the consequence. Earlier overweight was 'THE' common problem in middle aged people. but now it is a trend to see it among the children. And mothers are not even aware of it..
Childhood obesity is a condition where excess body fat, negatively affects a child's health or wellbeing.
Methods to determine body fat directly are difficult, the diagnosis of obesity is often based on "BMI" ( Body mass index) . Due to the rising prevalence of obesity in children and its many adverse health effects, is being recognized as a serious public health concern. The term overweight rather than obese is often used in children as it is less stigmatizing.
Usually or psychological childhood obesity, however can also lead to life -threatening conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep problems, asthma, early puberty etc. Studies have shown that over-weight children are more likely to grow up to be overweight adults.
Obese children often suffer from teasing by their peers. Some are harassed or discriminated against by their own family.
Prevention:- Prevention and awareness programs should target children as early as kindergarten with the involvement of parents.

Remote controls, Washing machines and other modern convenience devices, the majority of children are leading a much more sedentary life style. Physical inactivity of children has also shown to be a serious cause, and children who fail to engage in regular physical activity are a greater risk of obesity.
Genetics:- Many parents say it's the family gene. But they are not aware of the fact it is multifactorial. It is on your hand.
If you know that you have a disturbing genes that is your master controlling your appetite and metabolism leading to obesity. You should be more cautious. You know the famous quotation: "Prevention is better than cure".
Home environment:- Researchers discovered that four out of five parents let their children make their own food decisions.19% less likely to report poor consumption of vegetables and fruits.
